I have found that very comforting that even the richest and most successful people in the world still feel that the world is not doing right by them and so on. I think it's a lovely feature of universal human psychology. Oh, ignore this, ignore this insurrection over here. Like, it's just, they're so tiresome in that way. And they hate being questioned and they don't want to make hard decisions and be disliked. That's one of the things that they're just going to have to. I think that we can agree on. Number one, I too would prefer that what sort of effectively is the public square, even if you don't like the term or even if we shouldn't treat it like that. But what effectively is the forum and which everybody communicates is owned by a couple of people who get to make all of those decisions.

including how we're likely to actually curb extremist points of view or lies in misinformation and social media without giving up on really important aspects of freedom of speech. I'm sure you'll enjoy our, let's call it, a conversational debate. Cara Swisher, welcome to the podcast. Thank you very much. So you've been probably the closest observer of Silicon Valley as a journalist for a long time now. I guess one of the main things that I want to figure out in our conversation is to what extent Silicon Valley and the internet and social media have caused some of our political problems today and to what

Maybe there were 10 of those. We have to promote innovation. So there's lots of places for different voices and different standards to happen. And so there's not one coalesce place where the funnel comes down to where one guy like Mark, and I think he's really the only one who counts here in a lot of ways, because Twitter is small, but noisy. One guy gets to decide everything because there is no competition in social media. There's no competition in e-commerce. I think you can argue, although Jeff Bezos would argue differently. There's no competition in search. So that's where I want to focus on.

I mean, clearly the point about social media platforms is that I want to be on the social media platform that everybody else is on because otherwise I can't reach most people. And so isn't this an area where no matter how much innovation we have, perhaps will allow a challenger to beat the incumbents and that might have all kinds of benefits? But the fact that a challenger beats the incumbent doesn't necessarily solve the problem because then we go from Facebook and Twitter being the quasi public square to whatever next privately owned company being the quasi public square. And that doesn't actually solve the structural driver of. I think we've been through this. I think it's always better not to have competition if you're a chemical company or a phone company.

I don't know when I first taught, perhaps in 2013, I may be off on that. And even then, which not that long ago, you know, the main goal of my class was to get people to see the potential downsides. Of the Internet and so on, because we were still in the moment when it seemed obvious that it's going to transform the world for the better. And as somebody who always wants to see the other side of the argument everybody was making, it's like, look, I think there's all kinds of reasons to think we might make things better. But here's some of the reasons to worry that it might make things worse. And my students at that time would still look at me with very weird eyes when I try to say some of those things. Because it's all great. What are you going on about? This is sort of true, you know, and now I feel like everybody's on the other end of it and saying, it is making everything worse.
