These are the people with the power and the advantages. How do they treat women? How do they write about women? So you might expect them to be dismissive or disdainful. You might expect them to be complacent or patronising. You might expect them not to understand what women's experience is and all of these things are there in this writing. But that's not the feature that stands out for Wolf. What she notices is how angry the men are, that the dominant emotion running through this writing and it is emotion, not dispassionate male inquiry, is anger.

I was just trying to be funny. He's like the playground bully who beats you up. And then when you complain about it, tells you you haven't got a sense of humor and beats you up for that. I found myself thinking about this Christopher Hitchens essay when reading what is perhaps the greatest essay of the 20th century. Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own, published in 1929, based as so many essays are, like Thoreau's Civil Disobedience, originally on a talk, in this case a pair of talks that Virginia Woolf gave at two colleges, two women's colleges in Cambridge, ostensibly on the subject of women and fiction.

I mean, particularly that final section where there is this sort of meditation on how, you know, a young man must appear cheerful.
