The audience at its premiere was expecting something like the Seventh, and though they gave the Eighth Symphony a polite response, it was also somewhat lukewarm. Beethoven was outraged, and apparently when told that the audience didn't love it as much as the Seventh, he responded, referring to the Eighth Symphony, quote, that's because it's so much better. Beethoven does a lot of experiment in this slightly ironic look back into the classical era of symphonic writing, and so with that in mind I'm going to reprise my experiment from my show about the marriage of Figaro, and do live commentary over the symphony as I play it for you. This will be mostly unscripted, and just to give you an idea of what I hear as I listen to this piece with the score in front of me. I'll pause the music here and there to explain a concept in more detail, and I'll also give you a real introduction to the second movement of the symphony, since that has a truly great story, even if it is apocryphal.

Do you remember a few weeks ago, when I talked about Beethoven's Second Symphony? How it came at one of the most profoundly difficult times in Beethoven's life?

So I think the most striking thing about this opening, let's pretend this is the opening, is that Beethoven doesn't write any introduction. Of course the 7th Symphony had this massive introduction to it, but Beethoven here just throws us into the action right away.

If you're noticing, we're basically just repeating what we did the first time. Now Beethoven writes a diminuendo from an already soft dynamic so that we're trying to get as soft as possible for this note.
