And like most artists, he prefers solitary poetic meditation to the hustle and bustle of public life, but also like most artists, he always is drawn into the hustle and bustle of public life. And he regrets that his position forces him sometimes to withhold his opinion. And one of the other conversations he expresses that Schiller was always better than he was at speaking carefully or thinking before he made a public statement of opinion. It's for this reason that Gert says he was unfairly considered a friend of the powers that be, so-called, because he expressed outrage at the French Revolution.

And so I highly recommend this book if you're anything like me and you like a peek, a look into an earlier time and place, this peek into the early 19th century Germany with this larger than life figure and all of those little details. That being said, there are some limitations in talking about this in the context of a philosophy podcast. Today, I do intend to focus more on the ideas and I'm going to be spending less time on those literary aspects or talking about those little character details about Goethe or the prose.

I wrote it at the time of the French Revolution, continued Goethe, and it may be regarded in some measure as my political confession of faith at that time. I have taken the Countess as a type of the nobility, and with the words which I put into her mouth, I have expressed how the nobility really ought to think. The Countess has just returned from Paris. She has there been an eyewitness of the revolutionary events and has drawn therefore for herself no bad doctrine. She has convinced herself that the people may be ruled but not oppressed, and that the revolutionary outbreaks of the lower classes are a consequence of the injustice of the higher classes.

And meditations like this one not only have that clear imprint on that early essay of Nietzsche's, but we can see how these same considerations would sort of continue throughout Nietzsche's entire work. Goethe's criticism, therefore, that most men care about the sciences only to the degree that it profits them, I think could be seen as applying to himself as well. I mean, it would have to, right? He's saying that an objective view of history does not advantage us. Then he's like every other man willing to part with the objective truth for the sake of that advantage.
