In the meantime, I want to bring you a half old, half new episode. A long time ago, I did an introduction to opera, and then I did an episode on Mozart's cosy fantute in two parts. And I'm going to do kind of the same thing here. I'm going to redo the introduction to opera, and then I'm going to do a Patreon sponsored look in two parts at Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, my favorite opera, my favorite piece really on the planet. So I want to thank Stanley for sponsoring these two episodes on the Marriage of Figaro, and I really hope you enjoy this introduction to opera and the Marriage of Figaro.

Soon, this new idea had a name, opera, and 400 years later it remains almost as popular as it ever was. No doubt due to its genre-bending characteristics and incredible capacity for drama. Depending on the composer and performance, you could describe opera, and this is just a few of the possibilities, as a live-action movie musical, a poetry reading with musical accompaniment, or a four-day long exploration of the human psyche through the eyes of ancient mythology. So today I'm going to try to accomplish two things over the next couple of weeks. First we'll do a brief overview of how opera developed all the way up until Mozart's time.

So what was the point of the polyphony? Rhetjititiv with its single line and sparse accompaniment radically alleviated this problem. And this is where Jakobo Perry comes in. Perry realized that he could bring together the Rhetjitiv with arias or songs. The arias would be showcases for the singers while the Rhetjitivs served mostly to move the story along. This simple melding of song and speech would result in our first opera, Jakobo Perry's Daphne. Unfortunately, the score to Daphne is almost completely lost today, but Yuridice, his second opera, survives.

Monteverdi can't be missed if you're doing a brief survey of opera because his operas are not only some of the only operas from this period that are still performed today, but his music was also partially responsible for a huge development, namely taking opera out of the courts and into the public sphere. This was so important because when Perry's operas were first performed and the Florentine Camarado was codifying their ideas about how to make Greek drama come to life through Rhetjitiv, very little of this music was being heard by the general public.

Opera seria stayed mostly in the courts since the libretti were often written to glorify great rulers of the past, giving the nobility in the audience a feeling that they were carrying on a certain tradition, and ensuring that maybe someday operas would be written about them as well. Musically, there were a few defining characteristics of opera seria, but for now I'll only talk about two of them.

These two forces, opera seria and opera bufa, competed until the mid-1750s, when the reforms of Christoph Gluck brought them in some senses together. Gluck was a musical reformer who thought that both forms of opera, comedic and serious, had become stale and uninteresting.

Gluck was a musical reformer who thought that both forms of opera, comedic and serious, had become stale and uninteresting. In serious opera singers had become totally indulgent, often ornamenting and improvising so much that the audience would have no idea what the original melody was.

And so Gluck wanted to take these genres and refocus them on their original point, that original idea of the Florentine camarada from nearly 150 years before, which was the drama of the text and the story. In essence, Gluck wanted to take power away from the singers and return it back to the text.
