And so in the free will debate, there is usually some response of that nature from the free will libertarians or from the compatibilists. So the free will libertarians are the people who basically think the will is the uncaused cause. I should say the compatibilists are far more common these days, and to briefly explain who they are, the compatibilists are people who argue that free will and determinism can coexist. And this is usually based, you know, when you probe a little bit on some variation of Hitchens' assessment, or the general sentiment of like, don't careism, that even though the evidence or the arguments against freedom of the will might seem strong,

I might have been reading something about it that day but we were just sort of talking about philosophy and things of that nature. I brought up Free Will and my friend said, I don't have a position. I don't really care about the Free Will debate. And when I asked him why he repeated something that I've heard all too often, which is it doesn't matter. People are going to believe whatever they want to believe so the logic goes. So, you know, in absentia of any compelling evidence in one direction or another, people are going to take the position that matches with their temperament.

So this is not a real argument being made. It's the claim that we shouldn't even have the argument. I remember Hitchens himself argued in a debate on the topic of reparations. He said that whenever your opponent takes it upon himself to explain why you shouldn't even have the argument, that should get your attention, because it's something they don't want to touch. They know the evidence isn't there. This isn't a rationally held position and it's not going to stand up to scrutiny. And so in the free will debate, there is usually some response of that nature from the free will libertarians or from the compatibilists.

I'm just pointing out that if you're going to say that we can't get rid of free will because of some advantage it gives to believe in it, you leave yourself open to that counter argument. Okay, what if it gives greater advantage to get rid of it? And is that seriously what the argument should be about? What the nature of our noble lies should be? Is that really like a Petersonian style argument? But in any case, Peterson says, no, you simply have to go on believing in free will, even if it's not true.
